'John Carter' Early Reviews Have Turned up!

Disney has lifted the embargo, as well as the early reviews for "John Carter" are here. Experts are split on when the fantasy epic lives around anticipation, nevertheless the resounding truth is that "John Carter" needs to be seen and spoken about, an sadly rare quality in blockbusters recently. Came McWeeny at HitFix expressed amazement the movie from the scope might be made and needed an over-all positive stance saying, "The positive thing is the fact that Andrew Stanton, one of the cornerstones of Pixar as well as the director of both 'Finding Nemo' and 'WALL-E,' constitutes a nimble jump to reside in-action, and of his movie is ingrained getting an outrageous, thrilling pulp energy together with an authentic sense of question. It is a charming science-fiction adventure making no apologies for which it's." More particularly, many authors, including Badass Digest's Devin Faraci, designated Lynn Collins's performance since the Martian princess Dejah Thoris. "Lynn Collins is magnificent as Martian princess Dejah Thoris. Rarely features a female character similar to this been noticed in a boy-centric blockbuster Dejah can be a investigator additionally to some princess, together with a fierce warrior additionally to some totally sexy bombshell." TRAILER: Here's Your Best Look at The Avengers Yet

Marvel's The Avengers has the pressure of living up to years of hype resting on its shoulders, but a new trailer for the May 4 superhero pic looks promising, if not terribly complicated. Plot details, like what Loki's up to and why? Save it for the movie. This is the chance to give every one of the Avengers their close-up. Well, except for you, Hawkeye. Admittedly, Jeremy Renner's archery expert -- the least-well known character of the bunch, looking like the loner weirdo lurking around the popular kids at school -- does get a neat falling-backwards-through-the-air-while-shooting-an-arrow moment in the trailer, so there's that. Everyone else, though, gets to reveal a smidge of character in the span of two minutes: Nick Fury is concerned! Captain America is resentful! Tony Stark is bitchy! Black Widow is suggestive! We already know that our heroes will bicker before they unite to fight evil, blah blah blah. It is rather touching to see Hulk leap into the air to save Iron Man from eating pavement. I'm just waiting for fans to shout about how superior Ruffalo's Hulk is from the Ed Norton and Eric Bana versions, because guys? His Hulkface doesn't look that much better, does it? Verdict: Oh, who am I kidding? We're all seeing this one, aren't we? Anyway, head to Apple to watch the trailer in high res. The Avengers hits theaters on May 4.

Oscars 2012: Why 'Take Shelter' Deserved A Best Picture Nod

Nine films are nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, begging the question: who deserved a tenth spot on that list? "Oscars 2012: 10 Spot" answers that question, as the MTV Movies team highlights some of 2011's greatest films and argues why they deserved a nod as the tenth Best Picture nominee. Heres one of the big things for me when I contemplate my top films of any given year whats going to stick with me? Whats a film that will creep into my subconscious and always remain in some fashion? Whether its a comedy Ill return to in years to come (ahem, Fletch) or a precise and near perfect execution of genre staple (Im looking at you Unforgiven and Aliens and Manhattan). And then theres the stuff that just haunts you. You dont necessarily want it invading your thoughts and dreams and nightmares but there it is proof of how potent and provocative it is. Take Shelter is such a film. I first saw it over a year ago when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In the year since its the film Ive probably thought about the most. Recalling a little bit of Malick and a dose of dare I say Kubrick even (Curtis descent into madness absolutely brings to mind The Shining for me), writer/director Jeff Nichols shows off a cool and confident direction throughout. And then there are the performances. Jessica Chastains awesome year has been well documented and deservedly lauded but this might be the forgotten performance in the bunch and thats a shame because its sublime. But of course, at the end of the day, Take Shelter belongs to the great Michael Shannon. Usually relegated to supporting a bigger name, Shannon gives a veritable master class in this one. At times manic and delusional (or is he?), at others sadly feeble and desperate, his portrait of Curtis is a full one. Hes not a boogeyman or someone off his rocker that can be marginalized. Hes, like all of us, trying desperately to hold it together, dealing with the baggage hes been dealt, and at times overwhelmed by the pressures on his shoulders. Take Shelter is a film for these times, yes. When the Mayan apocalypse comes, skip Roland Emmerichs oeuvre and go right to this one. But it will live on far beyond 2012. And thats what makes it special and sadly overlooked by Oscar. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Stick with us for everything you need to know leading up to the awards show, and on Sunday, February 26, tune into MTV.com at 5:30 p.m. ET for our three-hour red-carpet live stream and updates on the night's big winners.

Who Understood? Something Known as Dorothy and also the Ghouls of Oz looks like it's Opening Friday

Can't watch for Mike Raimi's star-studded, mega-budget Oz: The Truly Amazing and Effective? What about a minimal-budget, modern-day twist around the L. Frank Baum classic featuring Dorothy like a children's book author (and Kansas transplant, natch) in Manhattan and co-starring Lance Henriksen, Billy Boyd and Christopher Lloyd? Oh. Well anyway, here's the most recent on Dorothy and also the Ghouls of Oz, the erstwhile little-seen small-series that by all looks a few days ago should be a little-seen theatrical release. Author-director Leigh Scott's film apparently has one of the most roundabout broadcast/distribution records associated with a recent movie (save for Margaret, possibly), and can finally arrived at theaters Friday. By "theaters," I am talking about "four venues in Arizona," with three more to follow along with February. 24 in Kansas and Kentucky. The film itself, meanwhile, seems pretty deeply New york city-centric -- because no a person's ever enforced that twist around the Oz legend before: It will type of look much better than What This Means Is War, right? As well as in "glorious 2D"! Well-performed, team. Arizona, you're in luck! [via Large Hollywood]

Brian Taylor Finds Twisted Metal

He'll direct the video game adaptationWe knew it could happen one day, but we didn't know exactly when. But the psychotic, symbiotic organism that is Neveldine Taylor (aka Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor) has torn itself apart and released Taylor dripping vital fluids to strike out on his own for a film. He's just locked in a deal with Sony to write and direct a movie based on video game Twisted Metal. The game, which not so coincidentally also happens to be a Sony property, is one of the best-selling titles. It features a Death Race-style underground tournament where warriors in pimped out cars compete and fight to the death. It's all run by a guy named Calypso, who has a driving (pun intended) obsession with the human condition and wants to explore such ideas as what makes peaceful men turn violent and who is willing to do what to walk away with their bodies intact.Among the drivers are Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown piloting an ice cream truck and Doll Face, a masked young woman who steers a huge truck. So pretty much firmly in Taylor's wheelhouse, then. Especially given that twisted metal is usually what remains when he and his regular cohort finish shooting.Talking of, before Crank heads start panicking, we doubt this means the end for the prime chaos of Neveldine & Taylor working together. The pair is ready to unleash Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance both here and across the pond on Friday and they've been talking up the idea of a sequel if it's a success. Plus, there are plenty of other joint ideas bubbling about in their crazed craniums...

'Party Down' Movie Script Is 'Almost Done,' Lizzy Caplan Says

Like the cast members of "Arrested Development," anyone and everyone that's ever been associated with the short-lived cult comedy series "Party Down" inevitably find themselves fielding the same question: when's the movie coming out? Of course, a "Party Down" movie isn't guaranteed, but cast members Lizzy Caplan and Megan Mullally both told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival that progress has been made on bringing the canceled series to the big screen. "I think they're almost done with the script," said Caplan. "And I have no doubt that it'll be fairly close to flawless. We'll just move forward very quickly and hopefully be able to shoot something this year." Mullally was a bit more cautious in her assessment of the "Party Down" film, largely due to recent comments she made that got her in hot water. "I got in trouble for saying it was definitely happening," she said. "So now I'm supposed to say it's looking good." As for what the movie might center on, Mullally heard one particular idea that should raise fans' interest. "Originally I know that Lizzy wanted one of the events that we catered to be Ken Marino's character's funeral," she laughed. "I don't know if that's really going to happen or not, but sorry Ron Donald. It's been real!" Mullally's husband and "Parks & Rec" star Nick Offerman has apparently heard a thing or two about the "Party Down" movie as well. "I do know there's going to be a lot of f---ing in the movie," he deadpanned. "It's going to be an X-rated movie with live-action, very hardcore sex scenes," Mullally agreed. Tell us what you think of the "Party Down" news in the comments section and on Twitter!

Around the Set: Shameless Appears The Warmth in Season 2

Shameless You hear the bickering the 2nd one enters the soundstage. "Sing it already," he states. "Oh, quiet," she states. "No, you." "No, you!" Whether it were not for William H. Macy's impish grin and also the huge laugh Emmy Rossum launches, you'd think the stars might really arrived at blows. But that is the way they roll around the group of Shameless, Showtime's energetic dramedy about existence within the downtrodden Gallagher household. The cast functions such as the figures they experience TV. With mother from the picture and papa Frank (Macy) too sauced to keep an eye on six kids, it's every misfit for him- or herself. As Rossum, who plays earliest daughter Fiona, states, "Think about the weakest, most off-kilter family you realize, multiply the intensity by 10 and stick these questions claustrophobic house in Chicago. This is the Gallaghers." Arrive the warmth and also you get Season 2, which premieres Sunday. Following a discontented winter, the Gallaghers are battling to remain awesome within the broil of the Chicago summer time. Still, it may as well be freezing out on set today in La. The whole cast is available to create a Christmas music video/promo that's a lot more like any excuses for the stars to fake-fight with each other. At some point in the center of the song (a parody of each and every serious Yuletide carol), Macy's mobile phone begins chirping. "Are you currently kidding me?" Rossum yells. Macy just glares at her. After he states, "As stars, we take our responsibility very seriously in the future off as completely family-crazy." To bond, the cast resided like real Gallaghers in the beginning, with small-golf excursions and forced rehearsals within the cramped living-room set. "Everyone needed to make their very own lunch from the set refrigerator and do their very own dishes," states John Wells, the ex-ER professional producer who modified Shameless from the British series of the identical title with original creator Paul Abbott. "It did not take lengthy for true disorder to occur." It's working. The Shameless finale last spring was the greatest-ranked season ender for any new Showtime series in ten years (new drama Homeland lately beat Shameless' finale amounts). Overall last season, this program averaged a lot more than 3.7 million audiences across various platforms (including When Needed and replays), right available online for with Showtime's Dexter, Weeds and today Homeland. And Joan Cusack gained an Emmy nomination on her role as kooky shut-in (and Frank's love interest) Sheila Jackson, whose husband Eddie's suicide last season dangles within the new episodes. "Season 1 established Frank like a guy who'll do anything whatsoever to remain drunk without having to try to support his family, even when which means siphoning off Sheila or sleeping together with her daughter," states Wells. However when Eddie's body appears this year in Lake Michigan having a cinder block associated with his ankle, Frank, as Cusack states, "will have some 'splaining to complete.Inch Another Gallaghers aren't much best. Fiona is within major denial about how exactly much she still loves Steve (Justin Chatwin), her cad-tastic boyfriend who went off and away to Panama And Nicaragua , to avert being charged with vehicle thievery. Now, "Fiona is cocktail waitressing but stays considerable time considering calling Steve and dating men she should not," states Rossum. Adds Wells, "We'll see Steve again, but it is quite different while he returns to town married to some Brazilian girl." Fiona's brother Lip (Jeremy Allen Whitened)and Sheila's daughter Karen (Laura Slade Wiggins)continue to be connecting up, despite the fact that Karen includes a boyfriend she met in Sex Addicts Anonymous. For money, Lip teams with gay brother Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and bartenders-neighbor Kev (Steve Howey) to market stuff from an ice- cream truck. "Just a little frozen treats, just a little pot," states Monaghan, whose character's true ambition is to buy into West Point. Plus there is edgy squirt Carl Gallagher (Ethan Cutkosky), who makes money watching individuals houses and stealing from their store. "Perfect project for a ten-year-old," Wells states. Frank, meanwhile, will get points for basically standing upright. Not too moving away from booze is incorporated in the cards. "Many people, whenever you sober them up, you want they'd a glass or two again, and i believe Frank's among individuals men," Wells states. To remain catatonic, Frank moves in on the butter-faced barfly from local pub The Alibi Room. "The girl waiting for a heart transplant and Frank, God bless him, is waiting for her demise so he is able to relocate on her behalf pension," states Macy. Back on set, the Gallaghers are finally harmoniously. Well, a minimum of the Christmas song sounds good. Until someone - it's difficult to inform who - hits an off note. Macy throws up his hands with exaggerated disgust: "You people can drive a man to consume!Inch Shameless airs Sundays at 9/8c on Showtime. Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

Retirees want their entertainment

Call it the geezer booster.Show business may be obsessed with the youth market, but older patrons may be more willing to spend on its wares, according to a new survey of retirees and pre-retirees commissioned by insurance and financial-services firm the Hartford.Based on almost 2,000 telephone interviews of adults 45 and older, the survey determined that only 9% of pre-retirees and 7% of post-retirees would forgo entertainment (defined as including movies, concerts and theater) if they had to give up one thing to make ends meet in retirement. For people already in retirement, that was the lowest percentage scored by any category. Justin Bieber, Werner Herzog to Finally Square Off for an Award

The fifth annual Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking will be handed out next month in NY City, with such inveterate documentarians as Errol Morris (Tabloid), Steve James (The Interrupters) and Kevin Macdonald (Life in a Day) facing off against the upstart likes of Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach), Tristan Patterson (Dragonslayer) and Clio Barnard (The Arbor). But look no further than the Audience Choice Award nominees for the most dynamic, high-stakes clash between old and new. See if you can spot it in the nominees announced today, on which you can vote at the Cinema Eye Honors site: · Bill Cunningham NY (Richard Press) · The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (Gran Olsson) · Buck (Cindy Meehl) · Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Werner Herzog) · Give Up Tomorrow (Michael Collins) · The Interrupters (Steve James) · Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (Jon M. Chu) · Project Nim (James Marsh) · Senna (Asif Kapadia) · Tabloid (Errol Morris) Your mileage may vary, but Bieber vs. Herzog seems to me the showdown of the 2011-12 awards season. To be fair, let’s give Jon M. Chu — the swell auteur behind Never Say Never — credit as the nominated filmmaker, but let’s also be honest about the cosmically profound implications of two 3-D films featuring two icons of our day, each reflecting the state of human culture some 30,000 years apart. The earliest known cave drawings versus the slickest statement of modern pop. The mysteries of both our distant ancestors and the generation that follows us — their lifestyles, their language, their dreams — and our lonely contemplation of how small we are against each. Herzog’s ecstatic truth versus Bieber’s hyperbolic truth, all reduced to anonymous, mediated democracy. Anyway, I’m voting for Bill Cunningham NY. Chime in for yourself here. · Audience Choice 2012 [Cinema Eye Honors]

"Vegas is pretty much based on big, big shows, and Motley Crue is also. We're putting together a show right now that's something we have never done in our lives. It's a stationary show. It doesn't have to move around, so we can do all kinds of stuff we only really dreamed about." Neil said the group plans for the production to be "interactive," with even those seated towards the back or the top of the venue "encompassed in the show." Drummer Tommy Lee added that, "I think more and more people are wanting an experience, and we're trying to bring that into this where people aren't necessarily at the show, they're IN the show. We're really trying to design something here that, when you leave there, you're wearing the show. You're taking parts of it with you. It's on you ... Why not make it a full-on experience, really? We're putting together moments of this show where the actual audience participates. They're in it. They're around it. It's going to be really exciting." PHOTOS: A History of Grunge in Pictures Neil and Lee did not share specific details to share about the production but Lee said that the show would involve "other entertainers ... and not in a musical fashion," as well as dancers in various stages of undress. "It sure would be fun to really do it Vegas style and have there be some nudity, or almost nude," Lee said, to which Neil added, "Basically, Tommy's saying there'll be lots of naked girls on stage." Lee also revealed he'll be using a modified, "even more crazy" version of the rollercoaster-like track that let him play upside down during the Crue's concerts this year. "Vegas is known for its huge, over the top shows," said Neil, who resides there when the band is off the road. "That's why I think we're a perfect fit for this." Lee, meanwhile, noted that "having (the show) not have to move every night really opens a bunch of doors for us -- literally trap doors." The Crue, whose last album was 2008's "Saints of Los Angeles," does not plan to include any brand new music in the shows, but Lee predicted there will be some flexibility in the set list from night to night. "I would imagine our plans are probably to switch it up," he said. "If we're doing a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, chances are there might be some people coming to see two shows ore maybe even three if they're there. Who knows? So I imagine we'll mix it up." The Motley Crue in Sin City show dates are Feb. 3-5, 8, 10-12, 14-15, 17-19. Ticket prices are $85 for the general admission pit and reserved floor seating, and $65 for balcony reserved with $129.50-$179.50 VIP packages. The presale has already started; public sales begin at 10 a.m. Saturday [Dec. 3] at www.motley.com, www.thejointlasvegas.com and www.ticketmaster.com. The Hard Rock is also offering vacation packages that include tickets to the show. Lee and Neil says the Crue will consider returning to Las Vegas for another residency, perhaps for even greater lengths. "If it's successful and works out for everybody, why not?" Neil says. "That's what's great about Vegas -- people from all over the world are here for a few days, then move on, new people always coming in. Basically you're having the world come to you." That said, the Crue -- which begins a six-date U.K. tour with Def Leppard and Steel Panther on Dec. 6 -- is planning to see some more of the world during 2012. A North American tour is likely, but Lee said whether it will be a Crue Fest package hasn't been determined. "We're still discussing and putting together plans for the summer ... planning the rest of our new year," the drummer explains. "Right now we're focusing on getting the Vegas residency dialed in." The quartet is also reported to be publishing a 10th anniversary expanded edition of its band memoir The Dirt -- Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, but neither Neil nor Lee specified what new material will be included. Rare Action Comics No. 1 Featuring First Superman Fetches Record $2.16M

The first issue of Action Comics, which came out in 1938, cost 10 cents and featured the first appearance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s superhero Superman, sold at auction today for $2.16 million. That’s a record for a single comic book, breaking the mark of $1.5 million set in 2010 by another Action Comics No. 1 copy, which wasn’t in as pristine shape. The record-breaking issue sold today went for $86,000 in 1992 and $150,000 in 1997, when it was reportedly purchased by Nicolas Cage. But it was stolen in 2000 and assumed lost until it turned up in a storage shed in April. Only about 100 copies of the issue are believed to exist.
