TRAILER: Here's Your Best Look at The Avengers Yet

Marvel's The Avengers has the pressure of living up to years of hype resting on its shoulders, but a new trailer for the May 4 superhero pic looks promising, if not terribly complicated. Plot details, like what Loki's up to and why? Save it for the movie. This is the chance to give every one of the Avengers their close-up. Well, except for you, Hawkeye. Admittedly, Jeremy Renner's archery expert -- the least-well known character of the bunch, looking like the loner weirdo lurking around the popular kids at school -- does get a neat falling-backwards-through-the-air-while-shooting-an-arrow moment in the trailer, so there's that. Everyone else, though, gets to reveal a smidge of character in the span of two minutes: Nick Fury is concerned! Captain America is resentful! Tony Stark is bitchy! Black Widow is suggestive! We already know that our heroes will bicker before they unite to fight evil, blah blah blah. It is rather touching to see Hulk leap into the air to save Iron Man from eating pavement. I'm just waiting for fans to shout about how superior Ruffalo's Hulk is from the Ed Norton and Eric Bana versions, because guys? His Hulkface doesn't look that much better, does it? Verdict: Oh, who am I kidding? We're all seeing this one, aren't we? Anyway, head to Apple to watch the trailer in high res. The Avengers hits theaters on May 4.

Oscars 2012: Why 'Take Shelter' Deserved A Best Picture Nod

Nine films are nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, begging the question: who deserved a tenth spot on that list? "Oscars 2012: 10 Spot" answers that question, as the MTV Movies team highlights some of 2011's greatest films and argues why they deserved a nod as the tenth Best Picture nominee. Heres one of the big things for me when I contemplate my top films of any given year whats going to stick with me? Whats a film that will creep into my subconscious and always remain in some fashion? Whether its a comedy Ill return to in years to come (ahem, Fletch) or a precise and near perfect execution of genre staple (Im looking at you Unforgiven and Aliens and Manhattan). And then theres the stuff that just haunts you. You dont necessarily want it invading your thoughts and dreams and nightmares but there it is proof of how potent and provocative it is. Take Shelter is such a film. I first saw it over a year ago when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In the year since its the film Ive probably thought about the most. Recalling a little bit of Malick and a dose of dare I say Kubrick even (Curtis descent into madness absolutely brings to mind The Shining for me), writer/director Jeff Nichols shows off a cool and confident direction throughout. And then there are the performances. Jessica Chastains awesome year has been well documented and deservedly lauded but this might be the forgotten performance in the bunch and thats a shame because its sublime. But of course, at the end of the day, Take Shelter belongs to the great Michael Shannon. Usually relegated to supporting a bigger name, Shannon gives a veritable master class in this one. At times manic and delusional (or is he?), at others sadly feeble and desperate, his portrait of Curtis is a full one. Hes not a boogeyman or someone off his rocker that can be marginalized. Hes, like all of us, trying desperately to hold it together, dealing with the baggage hes been dealt, and at times overwhelmed by the pressures on his shoulders. Take Shelter is a film for these times, yes. When the Mayan apocalypse comes, skip Roland Emmerichs oeuvre and go right to this one. But it will live on far beyond 2012. And thats what makes it special and sadly overlooked by Oscar. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Stick with us for everything you need to know leading up to the awards show, and on Sunday, February 26, tune into MTV.com at 5:30 p.m. ET for our three-hour red-carpet live stream and updates on the night's big winners.

TV Teaser: Mad Men Season 5

It’s been so long since anybody has seen anything new from four-time Best Drama Emmy winner Mad Men — as in we seem to recall there was some AMC series years ago about a good-looking but seriously flawed advertising guy and his co-workers set in the 1960s. But at last here’s the first teaser to the new season that begins March 25. Does it ring any bells?

Who Understood? Something Known as Dorothy and also the Ghouls of Oz looks like it's Opening Friday

Can't watch for Mike Raimi's star-studded, mega-budget Oz: The Truly Amazing and Effective? What about a minimal-budget, modern-day twist around the L. Frank Baum classic featuring Dorothy like a children's book author (and Kansas transplant, natch) in Manhattan and co-starring Lance Henriksen, Billy Boyd and Christopher Lloyd? Oh. Well anyway, here's the most recent on Dorothy and also the Ghouls of Oz, the erstwhile little-seen small-series that by all looks a few days ago should be a little-seen theatrical release. Author-director Leigh Scott's film apparently has one of the most roundabout broadcast/distribution records associated with a recent movie (save for Margaret, possibly), and can finally arrived at theaters Friday. By "theaters," I am talking about "four venues in Arizona," with three more to follow along with February. 24 in Kansas and Kentucky. The film itself, meanwhile, seems pretty deeply New york city-centric -- because no a person's ever enforced that twist around the Oz legend before: It will type of look much better than What This Means Is War, right? As well as in "glorious 2D"! Well-performed, team. Arizona, you're in luck! [via Large Hollywood]

Brian Taylor Finds Twisted Metal

He'll direct the video game adaptationWe knew it could happen one day, but we didn't know exactly when. But the psychotic, symbiotic organism that is Neveldine Taylor (aka Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor) has torn itself apart and released Taylor dripping vital fluids to strike out on his own for a film. He's just locked in a deal with Sony to write and direct a movie based on video game Twisted Metal. The game, which not so coincidentally also happens to be a Sony property, is one of the best-selling titles. It features a Death Race-style underground tournament where warriors in pimped out cars compete and fight to the death. It's all run by a guy named Calypso, who has a driving (pun intended) obsession with the human condition and wants to explore such ideas as what makes peaceful men turn violent and who is willing to do what to walk away with their bodies intact.Among the drivers are Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown piloting an ice cream truck and Doll Face, a masked young woman who steers a huge truck. So pretty much firmly in Taylor's wheelhouse, then. Especially given that twisted metal is usually what remains when he and his regular cohort finish shooting.Talking of, before Crank heads start panicking, we doubt this means the end for the prime chaos of Neveldine & Taylor working together. The pair is ready to unleash Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance both here and across the pond on Friday and they've been talking up the idea of a sequel if it's a success. Plus, there are plenty of other joint ideas bubbling about in their crazed craniums...
